A Japanese jumping pioneer who conquered the world stage twice, becoming the first woman to land a quadruple salchow in competition.
Miki Ando brought a powerful, athletic style to figure skating that shifted the sport's technical boundaries. Bursting onto the scene as a prodigious jumper, she shocked the skating world in 2002 by cleanly landing a quadruple salchow in junior competition—a first for any woman. Her senior career was a rollercoaster of immense talent battling inconsistency, but when she put it all together, she was untouchable. Ando claimed her first World title in 2007 in Tokyo, a victory laden with home-nation pressure. After becoming a mother in 2013, she staged one of the sport's most remarkable comebacks, refining her artistry to match her jumping prowess and capturing a second World championship in 2011. Her story is one of resilience, redefining what was physically possible for women in skating and proving that a champion's drive can evolve and deepen with life's changes.
