The quiet architectural force behind Genesis, providing its melodic backbone through decades of radical sonic transformation.
Mike Rutherford has been the steady, understated constant in the ever-evolving saga of Genesis. Joining as a schoolboy, he initially played bass while the band was a quirky progressive rock act fronted by Peter Gabriel. Following Gabriel's departure and Phil Collins's move to vocals, Rutherford seamlessly switched to lead guitar, crafting the ringing 12-string textures that defined the band's sound in the 70s. In the 80s, he masterminded the band's shift towards global pop success, writing the music for hits like 'Invisible Touch'. Simultaneously, he led the successful side-project Mike + The Mechanics, proving his songwriting prowess extended far beyond the Genesis umbrella. His career is a study in adaptable musicianship and quiet, consistent creativity.

Mike was born in 1950, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
