A comic book artist whose dynamic, clean-lined style defined a generation of covers and launched the Aspen Comics universe.
Michael Turner's artistic career was a meteoric rise cut tragically short, yet his influence on the look of American comics in the 2000s remains profound. Discovered while working as a background inker, his big break came on the Top Cow series 'Witchblade,' where his distinctive style—characterized by sleek, elongated figures, meticulous linework, and a compelling sense of motion—catapulted the book to new popularity. In 1998, he founded Aspen Comics and introduced 'Fathom,' a series that showcased his talent for designing compelling characters and aquatic fantasy worlds. Despite a years-long battle with bone cancer that began in his twenties, Turner's output was staggering, producing hundreds of memorable covers for both Marvel and DC, including runs on 'Superman/Batman' and 'Civil War.' His work possessed a bright, almost poster-like quality that stood out on the racks. Turner passed away in 2008, but the company he built, Aspen MLT, continues, and his art retains a dedicated following, a testament to a unique vision that blended pin-up glamour with superhero dynamism.
