An Austrian workhorse who carved out a decade-long NHL career, becoming a standard-bearer for European grit on North American ice.
Michael Raffl's journey to the NHL was anything but conventional. Hailing from Villach, Austria, he developed his game in the relative obscurity of the Austrian league, not drafted by any NHL team. His breakthrough came at the 2011 IIHF World Championship, where his relentless two-way play against top competition turned scouts' heads. Signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers, the left winger arrived as an unknown quantity but quickly became a fixture on their bottom six. Raffl's value was in his details: a strong defensive conscience, a willingness to battle in corners, and a sneaky-good shot that produced timely goals. He played over 500 NHL games, a remarkable feat for an undrafted Austrian, providing dependable depth for the Flyers, Capitals, and Stars. In 2023, he returned to Europe, bringing his veteran presence to Red Bull Salzburg, closing a loop that inspired a generation of Austrian players to believe they could make it overseas.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Michael was born in 1988, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
