A crafty halfback who orchestrated Newcastle's first premiership before masterminding its repeat as a coach a decade later.
Michael Hagan’s story is woven into the fabric of the Newcastle Knights. Arriving at the club in its formative years, his intelligent playmaking from halfback provided the strategic backbone for a rising team. His crowning moment came in 1997, steering the Knights to their historic first premiership with a calm, controlling performance in the grand final. After a playing career that also included State of Origin for Queensland, he returned to Newcastle as head coach in 2001. In a storybook twist, he guided a new generation, led by Andrew Johns, to another title in 2001, becoming one of the few to win a premiership with the same club as both player and coach. His later career saw him mentor at Parramatta and contribute to Queensland and Australian team setups, respected for his tactical mind and deep understanding of the game.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Michael was born in 1964, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
