An Army pilot whose survival after being shot down and captured in Somalia became a defining story of modern American warfare.
Michael Durant's life was irrevocably changed on October 3, 1993, when his Black Hawk helicopter was shot down over the streets of Mogadishu. As a Chief Warrant Officer flying a special operations mission, he survived the crash only to be taken prisoner by Somali militiamen, his injuries severe. His eleven-day captivity, and the brutal battle that raged to recover him and his crewmates, was later chronicled in the book and film 'Black Hawk Down.' Durant's calm under extreme duress became a testament to soldierly fortitude. After his recovery and retirement, he channeled his experience into writing and speaking, and later stepped into the political arena, running for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. His journey from the cockpit to captivity to civilian life encapsulates a unique chapter in military history.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Michael was born in 1961, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
