He carved a path to the Winter Olympics on tropical ice, becoming the first figure skater to represent the Philippines and Southeast Asia on the sport's biggest stage.
Michael Christian Martinez grew up in a Manila mall, of all places, where his first skates were rented. In a country with no winter and scant infrastructure for the sport, his rise was a story of improbable grit. He trained in sweltering rinks, his family sacrificing enormously to fund his dream. That dream crystallized at the 2014 Sochi Games, where he wasn't just the lone Philippine representative; he was a pioneer, proving a tropical nation could compete in a frozen arena. Though medals at the highest level remained elusive, his elegant artistry and technical skill, showcased again at PyeongChang 2018, inspired a generation in his homeland to look at ice differently.

Michael was born in 1996, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
