The final hereditary ruler of Sark, who presided over the tiny island's reluctant and dramatic transition from feudal law to democracy.
Michael Beaumont inherited a world that was, quite literally, from another time. Becoming the 22nd Seigneur of Sark in 1974, he took the reins of Europe's last feudal state from his formidable grandmother, Dame Sibyl Hathaway. A civil engineer by trade, he found himself governing a picturesque Channel Island where the Seigneur held the sole right to keep pigeons and unspayed dogs. His four-decade tenure was defined by a protracted, often contentious battle to modernize Sark's governance. Pressure from the European Court of Human Rights and changing societal expectations forced the end of the island's ancient system, culminating in the first democratic election of a legislature in 2008. Beaumont, often called the 'last feudal baron,' oversaw this peaceful revolution with a stoic sense of duty, watching centuries of tradition dissolve to meet the modern world.
