An Ethiopian distance runner whose blistering 10,000-meter time in 2009 stood as the second-fastest in history for over seven years.
Meselech Melkamu emerged from Ethiopia's deep pool of running talent to etch her name among the all-time greats. While she claimed a continental 5000m title in 2008, her defining moment came on a June evening in 2009 at the FBK Games in the Netherlands. In a stunning solo run, she clocked 29:53.80 for 10,000 meters, a time that shattered the African record and, for years, was only bested by a world record considered untouchable. This performance cemented her as one of the very few women to break the 30-minute barrier. Her career, marked by this phenomenal peak, represents the fierce competitive spirit and extraordinary depth of Ethiopian distance running.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Meselech was born in 1985, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
