A trailblazing Kenyan midfielder who broke continental barriers by becoming the first from his nation to win the UEFA Champions League.
McDonald Mariga’s story is one of pioneering ambition, carrying the hopes of a nation onto Europe's grandest football stages. Hailing from Nairobi, his powerful, box-to-box style earned him a move to Europe, where he climbed through Swedish and Italian clubs. His defining moment came in 2010 when he signed for Inter Milan, and though his playing time was limited, his inclusion in the squad made history. He became the first Kenyan to ever play in and win the UEFA Champions League, coming on as a substitute in the semi-final. This achievement made him a national hero and paved the way for his younger brother, Victor Wanyama. After his playing career, which included a stint at Spanish club Real Sociedad, Mariga transitioned into politics, seeking to leverage his fame for public service in Kenya.
