A Welsh actor of simmering intensity who mastered the art of playing men hiding profound conflict behind a carefully constructed facade.
Matthew Rhys possesses a rare talent for conveying volcanic emotion through restraint. The Cardiff-born actor, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, first caught wide attention in the US as the charming, conflicted lawyer Kevin Walker in 'Brothers & Sisters'. But it was his transformative turn as Soviet deep-cover agent Philip Jennings in 'The Americans' that revealed his full depth. For six seasons, Rhys wore the mask of a suburban travel agent while his character's soul was shredded by the demands of espionage and a manufactured marriage that became painfully real. His performance was a masterclass in internalized conflict, earning him an Emmy. He later channeled a different kind of brokenness as a Depression-era Perry Mason, all world-weariness and moral grit. Whether in a cable-knit sweater or a 1970s wig, Rhys specializes in characters whose true selves are a secret, even, at times, from themselves.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Matthew was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
