A rugged, stay-at-home defenseman who fought his way from undrafted free agent to over 100 NHL games through sheer physical will.
Mathieu Roy signed his first NHL contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2005, despite never being selected in an NHL draft. The Quebec-born defenseman built his reputation on fearlessness and physical engagement. His punishing style earned him a full-time NHL role. Roy measured his value in blocked shots, hard checks, and space cleared in front of his own net. He played for the Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers, often filling a sixth or seventh defenseman role. His career shows how determination and a tough-minded skill set can forge an NHL path where one wasn't readily given.

Mathieu was born in 1983, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
