A Czech playmaking wizard who orchestrated offenses on NHL ice before returning home to build and own the team he once captained.
Martin Straka's hockey life is a story of two acts. The first saw the swift, creative center leave communist Czechoslovakia for the NHL, where he became a fan favorite for his deft passing and clutch performances, most notably during a long stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins alongside Jaromir Jagr. His career spanned over a decade, marked by resilience after serious injuries. The second act began upon his return to the Czech Republic. Rather than simply retire, he bought a controlling stake in his hometown club, HC Plzeň, transforming it from a financial struggler into a Czech Extraliga champion. As owner and general manager, he applied the same competitive intelligence he used on the ice, building a legacy not just as a player, but as an architect of a modern hockey franchise.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Martin was born in 1972, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
