A commanding Lithuanian defender who became the backbone of his national team and a two-time Footballer of the Year before moving into management.
Marius Stankevičius carried the hopes of Lithuanian football on his shoulders for over a decade. As a tall, commanding central defender, his career was a map of European football's landscapes: from his beginnings at FBK Kaunas, to becoming a stalwart in Serie A with clubs like Sampdoria, Lazio, and Valencia in La Liga. He was the reliable constant in a national team that often punched above its weight, earning over 60 caps and serving as captain. In 2008 and 2009, his performances were so consistently excellent that he was named Lithuanian Footballer of the Year back-to-back, a rare honor for a defender. After hanging up his boots, he immediately transitioned into coaching, aiming to instill the defensive organization and leadership that defined his own playing days into the next wave of Lithuanian talent.

Marius was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
