A fiercely independent guitarist and vocalist who became a cornerstone of DIY punk, wielding a searing guitar tone and raw, commanding voice.
Marissa Paternoster emerged from the basement shows of New Brunswick, New Jersey, as a singular force in indie rock. As the frontwoman and guitarist for Screaming Females, she defied easy categorization, merging punk aggression with classic rock virtuosity and melodic punk-pop sensibility. Her guitar playing is immediately recognizable—a torrent of distorted, melodic leads that feel both technically impressive and emotionally cathartic. On stage, her slight frame belies a volcanic presence, her voice shifting from a sneer to a soaring wail. For over 15 years, she led the band as a true collaborative unit, maintaining an unwavering DIY ethos, self-recording albums and touring relentlessly in a van. Beyond Screaming Females, her solo project Noun allows for more personal and experimental songwriting. Paternoster is also a visual artist, often designing the band's album covers, creating a cohesive aesthetic world that mirrors the intensity and detail of her music.

Marissa was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
