An Estonian political modernizer steering his nation's foreign policy with a firm pro-Western stance amid a reshaped European security landscape.
Margus Tsahkna represents a new generation of Estonian leadership, a politician who came of age after the country regained independence. His path was unconventional, beginning with theology studies before a pivot to law and a deep dive into politics as a member of the center-right Pro Patria party. Tsahkna served as Minister of Defence and Minister of Social Affairs, earning a reputation as a pragmatic reformer. In 2023, his career took a decisive turn when he assumed the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs under Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. At a time of profound crisis due to Russia's war in Ukraine, Tsahkna became a vocal and unwavering advocate for robust support to Kyiv and for strengthening NATO's eastern flank. Concurrently, he took the helm of the newer, centrist Estonia 200 party, positioning himself as a figure focused on innovation, digital governance, and a forward-looking vision for Estonia's place in Europe.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Margus was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
