A staunch Quebec sovereigntist politician who quietly built a pioneering public opinion firm that became a Canadian industry giant.
Marcel Léger's life was split between the fervent political arena of Quebec nationalism and the precise, data-driven world of market research. First elected as a Parti Québécois MNA in 1976, he served as Minister of the Environment and Minister of Cultural Communities, advocating passionately for Quebec sovereignty during a transformative period in the province's history. His parallel legacy, however, was forged in the private sector. In 1986, he founded a polling firm that would grow into Léger Marketing, now known simply as Leger. Under his guidance, it became one of Canada's largest and most influential public opinion and market research companies, its surveys regularly shaping political and business discourse. Léger demonstrated that a deep commitment to a political cause could coexist with building an impartial, fact-finding institution, leaving a dual mark on Quebec's public life.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Marcel was born in 1930, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
