A Kenyan marathoner who stunned the world by winning gold at the 2007 World Championships in oppressive heat and humidity.
Luke Kibet's story is one of a spectacular, if brief, explosion onto the global stage. A prison officer by trade, he was not among the most heralded Kenyan distance runners when he arrived in Osaka for the 2007 World Championships. The marathon that day was run in brutal, sapping conditions that broke many favorites. Kibet, however, remained composed. Displaying tactical patience and rugged resilience, he pushed to the front in the later stages and held on to claim a shocking gold medal. This victory, achieved in a championship record time for the hot conditions, announced him as a world-beater. While injuries and consistency later challenged his career, that single race in the Japanese heat secured his place in athletics history as a champion who rose to the occasion when it mattered most.

Luke was born in 1983, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
