A fiery left-hander with a devastating topspin forehand, she rose to the top of doubles while forging a formidable singles career defined by grit.
Lucie Šafářová's tennis was a study in contrasts: a petite frame unleashing ferocious, whip-like groundstrokes, particularly a forehand that became one of the WTA's most feared weapons. Hailing from the Czech tennis factory, her path wasn't linear. She announced herself as a teenager with a run to the 2007 Wimbledon semifinals, but consistency at the highest level proved elusive for years. Her breakthrough came in 2015, a season where she reached the French Open final, pushing Serena Williams to three sets, and cracked the world's top five. While singles brought her fame, doubles brought her dominance. Teaming with Bethanie Mattek-Sands, she found a perfect partnership of power and touch, completing a Career Grand Slam in doubles and spending 68 weeks as world No. 1. Her career was also marked by resilience, battling through serious health challenges, including a bacterial infection in 2018, to return to the court.
