A Brazilian-born defender who forged a successful club career in Qatar before making the unusual switch to represent the Qatari national team.
Lucas Mendes won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup with Qatar and played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, he developed through Corinthians' youth system, learning the technical skills typical of Brazilian football. In 2012, he moved to Qatar to join Al-Wakrah, spending over a decade in the Qatar Stars League as a defensive mainstay at center-back or left-back. His consistent performances and lengthy residency made him eligible for naturalization. In 2019, he accepted a call-up to the Qatar national team, swapping the famous yellow jersey for the maroon of his adopted home. This move placed him on the squad that won the Asian Cup and later competed in the World Cup, a testament to Qatar's project of bolstering its national side with experienced, naturalized talent.

Lucas was born in 1990, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
