A pragmatic and persistent campaigner who broke a Conservative stronghold to become Solihull's first Liberal Democrat MP and a champion for humanist values.
Lorely Burt's political journey is one of patient, ground-level campaigning. Before entering Parliament, she ran her own business, an experience that shaped her pragmatic approach to economics and advocacy for small enterprises. In 2005, she achieved a significant upset by winning the traditionally Conservative seat of Solihull, becoming the constituency's first Liberal Democrat MP. For a decade, she served as the party's spokesperson on business and later as a whip, known for her constructive and personable style. After losing her seat in 2015, her service was recognized with a life peerage, taking the title Baroness Burt of Solihull. In the House of Lords, she has continued to advocate for her causes, notably as a patron of Humanists UK, promoting secular and rationalist principles in public policy.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Lorely was born in 1954, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
