The rugged, enduring heart of Italian rugby, a hooker whose 100+ caps embodied the grit and set-piece mastery of the Azzurri pack.
Leonardo Ghiraldini was the embodiment of the Italian rugby forward: technically astute, relentlessly physical, and fiercely proud. For over a decade, his was the face in the center of the scrum for the Azzurri, earning well over a century of caps in a position where longevity is rare. His club career saw him become a cult hero at Benetton Treviso, winning multiple domestic titles, before a successful five-year stint in the English Premiership with Leicester Tigers, where he added a league title to his resume. Ghiraldini's game was built on foundational strength; his lineout throwing was precise, and his work at the breakdown was uncompromising. He captained Italy on several occasions and was a central figure in some of the national team's most famous Six Nations victories. Even in his final act, a move to Stade Toulousain, he contributed to a Top 14 championship, closing a career that was a masterclass in front-row craftsmanship and resilience.
