A Russian gymnast whose blend of powerful tumbling and exquisite artistry on the uneven bars defined a generation of elegance in the sport.
Ksenia Semyonova arrived on the world gymnastics stage with a style that seemed to belong to a different era—one where balletic lines and expressive performance were as important as the difficulty score. Hailing from Tula, she announced herself by winning the world title on the uneven bars in 2007, a routine marked by seamless transitions and a rare grace. The following years solidified her reputation: she became European all-around champion in 2009, a testament to her well-rounded capabilities beyond her signature apparatus. Her career coincided with a resurgent Russian team, and she contributed to a world team gold in 2010. While an Olympic medal eluded her, her fourth-place finishes in the all-around and team events at the 2008 Beijing Games were heartbreaks that did little to diminish her legacy. She retired as one of the last standard-bearers of a distinctly Russian aesthetic of beauty in motion.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Ksenia was born in 1992, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
