His saxophone riffs and guitar hooks defined the sound of INXS, one of the world's biggest rock bands of the 1980s and 90s.
Kirk Pengilly stepped onto the global stage not as a frontman, but as the essential sonic colorist for INXS. Born in Sydney, he co-founded the band with the Hutchence brothers while still in high school, his versatility on saxophone and guitar becoming a cornerstone of their funk-inflected rock. While Michael Hutchence commanded the spotlight, Pengilly's contributions were indelible: the urgent sax break in "Never Tear Us Apart," the shimmering guitar intro to "Need You Tonight." He provided more than instrumentation; his backing vocals and stage presence, often coolly poised beside the dynamo frontman, were integral to the band's tight, stylish image. Through decades of touring, recording, and navigating the band's complex legacy after Hutchence's death, Pengilly remained a constant, his musicianship a direct link from the pubs of Perth to stadiums worldwide.
