The 'King of Raï' who transformed a regional Algerian folk style into a global dance phenomenon with anthems of love and rebellion.
Born in Oran, Algeria, Khaled was a child of the raï scene, earning the nickname 'Cheb' (young) as a teen singer in the bustling wedding and club circuit. Raï, a raw, poetic music of the people, found its ultimate voice in him. His 1992 album 'Khaled' and its seismic hit 'Didi' blasted through borders, fusing traditional Algerian rhythms with slick, international production and making him a superstar across the Arab world and Europe. More than just a pop success, Khaled's music carried the spirit of a generation, blending themes of joy, heartache, and social commentary. His subsequent collaborations with Western artists like Don Was and Moby further cemented his role as a crucial bridge between North African and global pop, ensuring the passionate, reed-driven sound of raï reached dance floors everywhere.

Khaled was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
