Keith Appling was convicted of first-degree murder in 2021 for a 2017 drug-related shooting, receiving 18 to 40 years in prison. In Detroit, he was a McDonald's All-American high school phenom known for explosive athleticism. At Michigan State under Tom Izzo, he played four years as a key guard, defending tenaciously and attacking the rim. After going undrafted in 2014, his NBA and G League stints gave way to legal troubles, ending a once-promising athletic journey.
