A Scottish Labour stalwart who transitioned from Westminster MP to MSP, championing workers' rights and public service from the backbenches.
Born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Katy Clark's political journey is rooted in the industrial heartlands of Scotland. She cut her teeth as a trade union lawyer, representing workers long before entering the House of Commons in 2005 as MP for North Ayrshire and Arran. For a decade in Westminster, she built a reputation as a principled, left-wing Labour backbencher, often at odds with her own party's leadership, particularly on issues like Trident renewal and military intervention. Defeated in the 2015 SNP surge, she remained a forceful voice, serving as political secretary to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Her return to elected office in 2021 as a Member of the Scottish Parliament for West Scotland, followed by her elevation to the House of Lords as Baroness Clark of Kilwinning, marked a rare political second act. She continues to advocate for socialist policies within the complex landscape of Scottish and British politics.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Katy was born in 1967, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
