A Scottish actress who rocketed from a Doctor's companion to a shaven-headed galactic assassin in the Marvel universe.
Karen Gillan grew up in Inverness, a world away from Hollywood, but her ambition was never in doubt. After studying acting in Edinburgh and London, she landed the role that would change everything: Amy Pond, the fiery, red-headed companion to Matt Smith's Doctor on Doctor Who. Her chemistry with Smith and Arthur Darvill, who played her on-screen husband Rory, turned the trio into a beloved fixture of modern sci-fi. Gillan didn't settle into typecasting. In a bold move, she shaved her head for the role of Nebula in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, transforming herself into a complex, cybernetically enhanced villain seeking redemption. This physical commitment defined her career shift, proving she was an actor willing to disappear into physically and emotionally demanding parts. She has since stepped behind the camera, writing and directing the comedy-drama The Party's Just Beginning, drawing on her Highland roots to tell a story of grief and connection.

Karen was born in 1987, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
