A resilient Czech defenseman who battled to the NHL, only to have his life and career tragically cut short.
Karel Rachůnek's story is one of quiet determination shadowed by profound loss. Drafted late by the Ottawa Senators, the defenseman from Zlín had to prove himself at every turn. He did, becoming a reliable presence on the blue line for Ottawa, the New York Rangers, and the New Jersey Devils over eight NHL seasons. His game was not flashy but effective, built on smart puck movement and a steadying influence. After returning to Europe, he became captain of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a leader for a KHL powerhouse. In September 2011, his life ended alongside his entire team in a plane crash that shocked the hockey world. Rachůnek is remembered not just for his career, but as a symbol of the devastating void left by that tragedy.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Karel was born in 1979, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
