An immigrant entrepreneur who turned a student's fondness for Indian beer into the global Cobra brand and a seat in Britain's House of Lords.
Karan Bilimoria arrived in Britain as a Cambridge law student with massive debt and a simple observation: the lagers served in curry houses were too gassy and filling. Partnering with a brewer from Bangalore, he set out to create a smoother, more drinkable beer to accompany spicy food. Starting from his flat, with an old Renault hatchback as his delivery van, Bilimoria built Cobra Beer not just through savvy marketing but through sheer hustle, personally convincing restaurant owners one by one. The brand's success story became a symbol of modern British enterprise, blending Indian heritage with global ambition. His business acumen led him to broader leadership roles, including the presidency of the Confederation of British Industry, where he advocated for inclusive economic growth. In 2006, his contributions were recognized with a life peerage, and as Lord Bilimoria, he has been a vocal independent voice in the House of Lords, championing education, entrepreneurship, and international trade, embodying the journey from startup founder to statesman.

Karan was born in 1961, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
