A Greek cyclist who pedaled into history by piloting a human-powered aircraft on a record-breaking flight from Crete to Santorini.
Kanellos Kanellopoulos is an athlete whose greatest feat occurred not on the pavement but in the sky. While he competed as a cyclist in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, his name is permanently etched in aviation history. In 1988, he became the human engine for the MIT Daedalus project, a daring attempt to recreate the myth of Icarus with modern engineering. Strapped into a fragile, lightweight aircraft, Kanellopoulos used his exceptional endurance to power the craft for nearly four hours across the Aegean Sea. His successful landing on Santorini secured a world record for the longest human-powered flight, a stunning fusion of athletic prowess and scientific ambition that has yet to be surpassed.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Kanellos was born in 1957, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

The Daedalus aircraft had a wingspan wider than a Boeing 727 but weighed only about 70 pounds.
The flight followed, in reverse, the mythical path of Icarus and Daedalus.
He was selected as the pilot from a pool of elite cyclists for his optimal power-to-weight ratio and endurance.
