A Dalit physician-politician who channeled a lifetime of confronting caste discrimination into founding a political party to uplift Tamil Nadu's most marginalized communities.
Dr. K. Krishnasamy's path from medicine to politics was forged in the harsh realities of caste oppression in Tamil Nadu. As a doctor serving in rural areas, he witnessed firsthand the systemic neglect and violence faced by Dalits, particularly the Pallar community. This direct experience propelled him from healing bodies to fighting for social justice. His political activism was visceral and confrontational, often highlighting cases of atrocity against Dalits to challenge the establishment. In 1999, he crystallized this movement by founding the Puthiya Tamilagam (New Tamil Nadu) party, creating a distinct political voice for backward castes and Dalits that operated outside the shadow of Tamil Nadu's dominant Dravidian giants. While his party's electoral successes have been regional, his unwavering advocacy has forced broader political conversations about land rights, education, and dignity for the state's most oppressed citizens, making him a persistent and potent symbol of resistance.
