The reclusive Wisconsin songwriter who transformed heartbreak into a falsetto-soaked sound that defined a generation of indie folk.
Justin Vernon's story is one of retreat and resonant return. After the dissolution of his early band DeYarmond Edison and a personal breakup, he holed up in his father's remote Wisconsin hunting cabin for three winter months. There, amid self-imposed isolation, he recorded the sparse, emotionally raw songs that would become Bon Iver's debut, 'For Emma, Forever Ago.' The album, initially self-released, became a word-of-mouth phenomenon, its layered falsetto and atmospheric folk feeling both intimate and vast. Vernon, a meticulous and collaborative producer, refused to be pigeonholed. He followed up with the electronically adventurous, self-titled 'Bon Iver,' which won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, and later delved into abstract, sample-based textures on '22, A Million.' His influence extends through his work with artists like Kanye West and his own collaborative projects, establishing him as a quiet force who reshaped the sound of introspective songwriting.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Justin was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
