A polarizing Labour Party modernizer who led Malta to rapid economic growth but saw his premiership collapse amid scandal.
Joseph Muscat's political career was a story of dramatic ascent and a precipitous fall. Elected leader of Malta's Labour Party in 2008, he rebranded it as a modern, centrist force, ending a 15-year Nationalist grip on power with a decisive victory in 2013. As Prime Minister, he presided over a period of breakneck economic expansion, fueled by liberalized citizenship schemes, a booming gaming industry, and positioning Malta as a blockchain hub. His tenure was marked by progressive social reforms, including the legalization of same-sex marriage. However, his administration became increasingly associated with allegations of corruption and cozy ties with big business. The 2017 car bomb murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who had relentlessly targeted his inner circle, cast a long shadow. Widespread protests following revelations linking his chief of staff to the murder ultimately forced Muscat to resign in January 2020, leaving a complex legacy of prosperity intertwined with profound political crisis.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Joseph was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
