Biography

Joseph Heller transformed his experiences as a B-25 bombardier in World War II into a defining literary statement of the 20th century. 'Catch-22', published in 1961, wasn't an immediate smash but grew into a cultural phenomenon, its title cementing itself as shorthand for any no-win bureaucratic trap. Heller's prose was a frantic, circular, and deeply funny engine driving at the heart of existential dread. He spent the rest of his career, through novels like 'Something Happened' and 'Good as Gold', dissecting the absurdities of corporate life, government, and the human condition with the same unblinking, satirical eye, ensuring his voice remained a vital critique of systemic folly.

The Greatest Generation

1901–1927

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.

Joseph was born in 1923, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Did You Know?

The idea for 'Catch-22' came to him in a moment of inspiration while lying in bed; he began writing it the next day.

He once said, 'When I read something saying I've not done anything as good as Catch-22 I'm tempted to reply, 'Who has?''

Heller taught creative writing at City College of New York and Yale University.

He suffered from a paralyzing case of Guillain-Barré syndrome in 1981, which he wrote about in the memoir 'No Laughing Matter'.

“He had decided to live forever or die in the attempt.”
