A movie star turned populist president, his dramatic rise and fall from power captured the turbulent theater of Philippine politics.
Joseph 'Erap' Estrada's story is a uniquely Filipino blend of cinema and statecraft. He first found fame not in a boardroom or a courtroom, but on the silver screen, playing underdog heroes and rebels in over a hundred films. That everyman persona propelled him into politics, where he traded his screen persona for real-world power, serving as mayor, senator, and vice president. His landslide 1998 presidential victory was a triumph of his 'pro-poor' image, but his administration was quickly mired in allegations of corruption and incompetence. Massive protests, dubbed 'People Power II,' forced him from office in 2001, a historic first for a Philippine president. In a twist befitting his cinematic life, he was later convicted of plunder but almost immediately pardoned, and he staged a remarkable political comeback, winning the mayoralty of Manila in 2013.
