A troubled army enlistee whose brief, racially motivated killing spree in 1980-81 terrorized New York State, leaving a legacy of fear and unanswered questions.
Joseph Christopher existed in the shadows, a quiet, socially isolated man whose internal turmoil erupted in a wave of horrific violence over 13 months. Operating in Buffalo, Rochester, and New York City, he targeted Black men and boys exclusively, using a .22 caliber gun and a knife, earning him media monikers like the '.22 Caliber Killer' and 'Midtown Slasher.' His capture came not from forensic brilliance, but from his own hospitalization after a bizarre self-inflicted genital injury. Diagnosed with severe paranoid schizophrenia, he was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a psychiatric prison. His motives, tangled in delusions of racial war and personal inadequacy, were never fully parsed in a courtroom. He died of AIDS-related illness in prison, his spree remaining a dark, chaotic chapter in the history of American serial crime.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Joseph was born in 1955, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
