A one-club man who became the embodiment of Athletic Bilbao's fierce local identity, transitioning from a dynamic winger to a respected manager.
Born in the Basque town of Elgoibar, Joseba Etxeberria's footballing destiny was intertwined with Athletic Bilbao from the start. He debuted for Real Sociedad, but his 1995 move to Athletic, where he would spend the next 15 years, defined his career. On the left wing, he was a blur of speed and directness, a constant threat who played with a palpable local passion. His loyalty in an era of increasing player mobility made him a symbol for the club's unique philosophy of fielding only players from the Basque region. After hanging up his boots in 2010, he moved into coaching within the Athletic structure, managing their reserve team and later taking the helm of the first team in 2024, tasked with upholding the traditions he once embodied on the pitch.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Joseba was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
