The musical architect behind Spain's most innovative pop band who later reinvented himself as a sought-after painter and visual artist.
José María Cano began not as a pop star, but as an economics student and banker in London. That analytical mind, however, housed a profound artistic vision. With his brother Nacho and singer Ana Torroja, he formed Mecano in the early 1980s, a band that would redefine Spanish pop. As the principal composer, Cano crafted sophisticated, synth-driven melodies and lyrics that tackled themes from social issues to intimate dramas, producing era-defining hits like 'Hijo de la Luna' and 'Mujer Contra Mujer.' His work gave Mecano a sound that was both distinctly Spanish and utterly modern, earning them massive success across Europe and Latin America. In a surprising pivot at the height of the band's fame, Cano stepped back to pursue his first love: visual art. Since the late 1990s, he has built a second, equally serious career as a painter and sculptor, with his work exhibited in major galleries and fetching high prices at auction, completing a rare journey from pop composer to established fine artist.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
José was born in 1959, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
