An Australian folk icon whose anthemic songs like 'True Blue' became the unofficial soundtrack for a nation's love of its land and identity.
John Williamson wrote 'True Blue' in 1981, a song that became an unofficial Australian anthem, played at funerals, sporting events, and national celebrations. He emerged in 1970 with 'Old Man Emu,' a novelty hit about the flightless bird, but quickly revealed deeper ambitions. For five decades, Williamson has written about the outback's beauty, farmers' struggles, Indigenous stories, and suburban life. His Akubra hat and guitar became national symbols. He advocated for conservation, rural communities, and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. His concerts function as communal gatherings where city audiences and bush audiences find common ground. Williamson received an Order of Australia medal and multiple Golden Guitar awards. He continues to tour and record into his late 70s, still singing about the country he calls 'the land that gave me birth.'

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
John was born in 1945, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
