Biography

John Spenkelink's life ended at the Florida State Prison in 1979, but his death marked a beginning. Convicted for the 1973 murder of a traveling companion, his case became a national focal point as he fought his sentence for six years. His legal battle unfolded after the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976, and he became the first person executed in Florida under the new laws, and the second in the nation. Crucially, he was the first inmate put to death against his will since 1965, moving the death penalty from theory to grim reality. His execution was met with protests and extensive media coverage, transforming him from a convicted murderer into a reluctant and controversial figurehead for the anti-death penalty movement. The switch was thrown, and a new, enduring era of American capital punishment began.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

John was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
