Biography

For many, the sound of the holiday season is inextricably linked to the melodies of John Rutter. With an uncanny gift for tunefulness and rich harmonic language, Rutter has composed and arranged a body of choral work that feels both fresh and timeless. He founded the Cambridge Singers not just as a performing ensemble, but as a vehicle to record his own music and that of other composers on his independent label, Collegium Records—a move that gave him unprecedented artistic control. While his Christmas music, like the 'Star Carol' and 'Shepherd's Pipe Carol,' garners the widest fame, larger works like his 'Requiem' and 'Gloria' are staples of the concert hall. Knighted in 2021, Rutter operates less as an avant-garde figure and more as a communicator, crafting music of immediate emotional resonance that has democratized the choral experience for singers and audiences across the globe.

The Silent Generation

1928–1945

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.

John was born in 1945, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Did You Know?

He composed his first published work, 'Shepherd's Pipe Carol,' while still a student at Clare College, Cambridge.

Rutter has collaborated with orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

He turned down an invitation to be the director of music at his alma mater, Clare College, to focus on composing.

Despite being closely associated with sacred music, he has described himself as 'a friend of the church' rather than a conventional believer.

“Music is a wonderful, irrational, mysterious, heart-easing thing.”
