Biography

John McCarthy's story is one of bright promise shadowed by tragedy. Drafted by Collingwood, the heartland club of Australian rules football, he worked diligently to break into a powerhouse team, eventually playing in the 2011 preseason premiership. Seeking greater opportunity, he moved to Port Adelaide in 2012, where he began to show flashes of the tough, running midfielder he was poised to become. His 21 games for Port Adelaide that season hinted at a career on the rise. In September 2012, during a post-season trip to Las Vegas with teammates, McCarthy died in a fall from a hotel rooftop. His passing at just 22 sent shockwaves through the AFL, a brutal reminder of life's fragility and leaving behind only questions of what might have been.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.

John was born in 1989, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
