The sharp-tongued engineer and political operator who wielded immense power as Governor of New Hampshire and later as George H.W. Bush's forceful White House chief of staff.
John Sununu's career was built on a foundation of intellectual horsepower and political hardball. Born in Havana to a Lebanese father and a Cuban mother, he earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT and was a university dean before turning to politics. As a three-term governor of New Hampshire, he was a fiscal conservative who balanced budgets and hosted the pivotal first-in-the-nation presidential primary. His true impact, however, came in Washington. As White House chief of staff for President George H. W. Bush, Sununu was the administration's enforcer—a brilliant, sometimes abrasive gatekeeper whose mastery of policy detail and legislative maneuvering was unmatched. His tight control over access and agenda was both his strength and his ultimate liability, leading to his resignation after controversies over his use of military aircraft. Sununu remained a potent voice in conservative circles, later appearing as a political commentator.
