The gruff, no-nonsense Scottish driver who muscled his Vauxhall to two British Touring Car Championships with sheer determination and racecraft.
John Cleland didn't look or sound like a typical racing star. With his thick Scottish brogue and straightforward demeanor, he was a throwback to an era of grit over glamour. His career was built in the rough-and-tumble world of saloon car racing, where door-handle-to-door-handle contact was a feature, not a bug. Driving for the factory Vauxhall team, Cleland became the heart of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in its 1990s heyday. His first title in 1989 was a breakthrough, but his 1995 championship was legendary, defined by a final-race showdown at Silverstone where he secured the crown in dramatic fashion. Known for his aggressive yet clean driving and his hilarious, unfiltered post-race interviews, Cleland was a fan favorite who represented everyman determination in a sport increasingly dominated by technology and polish.
