A beloved and versatile character actor who became a national fixture in Finland, most famously as the rumpled, intuitive detective Inspector Palmu.
Joel Rinne's face and voice were familiar comforts in Finnish homes for over half a century. Beginning his career on the stage in the 1920s, he developed a robust presence in both comedy and drama, becoming a mainstay of the Finnish National Theatre. His transition to film was seamless, and he appeared in over 80 movies, often portraying wise, warm-hearted, or slyly humorous everymen. His defining role came later in life when he was cast as the titular detective in the 'Inspector Palmu' film series. With his pipe, hat, and unassuming manner, Rinne's Palmu was no action hero but a thinker who solved crimes through patience and understanding of human nature, embodying a very Finnish ideal of quiet competence. Beyond Palmu, his dignified portrayal of Marshal Mannerheim in 'Päämaja' showcased his range. Rinne worked tirelessly until his death, leaving behind a body of work that serves as a portrait of 20th-century Finnish society.
