Biography
In the constellation of Celtics stars like Bill Russell and Bob Cousy, Jim Loscutoff was the necessary gravity—a tough, hard-nosed forward who did the dirty work. Drafted in 1955, 'Loscy' carved out a role defined by muscle, rebounding, and intimidating defense. He was the team's designated strongman, setting punishing screens and battling under the boards to create space and opportunities for his more celebrated teammates. His physical style was a key ingredient in the team's identity, helping to forge seven championship teams in nine seasons. While his statistics were never gaudy, his value was immeasurable in the grind of the playoffs. So beloved was his contribution that the Celtics retired his number 18, though they later unretired it at his own request so it could be worn by another franchise cornerstone, Dave Cowens.
