Biography

Jerry Stiller's comedy was a family business, born literally from the Borscht Belt circuit where his parents performed. He honed his craft in theater, but his career truly ignited when he teamed up with his wife, Anne Meara, to form the sketch comedy duo Stiller and Meara. Their act, built on the friction between his short, explosive Jewish persona and her tall, Irish-Catholic one, made them staples of television variety shows and commercials for decades. After years as a respected but not widely known performer, Stiller experienced an unexpected second act in his mid-sixties. His portrayal of Frank Costanza, George's perpetually outraged father on 'Seinfeld,' was a masterpiece of controlled chaos—from inventing 'Festivus' to screaming about 'serenity now!' He then seamlessly transitioned to playing the equally needy and manipulative Arthur Spooner on 'The King of Queens.' These roles introduced his uniquely sputtering, physically comic rage to a new generation, making him a television icon and proving that comedic genius only deepens with age.

The Greatest Generation

1901–1927

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.

Jerry was born in 1927, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
