His revolutionary 'string-bending' technique created a crying, vocal-like guitar sound that defined the texture of British folk rock.
Jerry Donahue is a guitarist's guitarist, an American expat who became a cornerstone of the British folk rock movement. Moving to London in the early 1970s, he brought a unique hybrid of country precision and rock energy to bands like Fotheringay and, most famously, Fairport Convention. It was with Fairport that his influence became indelible. Donahue perfected a breathtaking technique of bending strings with his fretting hand to create microtonal, weeping melodies that mimicked the human voice or a pedal steel guitar. This sound became a signature color on classic albums like 'Gottle O'Geer' and 'Rising for the Moon.' Beyond his band work, he became a sought-after session musician, adding his distinctive touch to records by artists like Joan Armatrading and Robert Plant. Later, with the instrumental trio The Hellecasters, he showcased his virtuosity in a full-tilt rock context, proving his skills transcended any single genre.

Jerry was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
