The steady-handed Mayor of Bremen who briefly steered the entire nation as Germany's acting president during a political crisis.
Jens Böhrnsen represented a certain breed of German politician: pragmatic, unflashy, and deeply rooted in his city-state. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he led Bremen as its Mayor and Senate President for a decade, navigating the historic port city through economic shifts and coalition politics. His national moment arrived not through campaign triumph, but constitutional duty. In 2010, following the sudden resignation of President Horst Köhler, Böhrnsen, in his role as President of the Bundesrat (the federal council of states), became the acting head of state of Germany. For one month, he performed the ceremonial duties of the presidency with characteristic calmness, ensuring stability until a new president was elected. He stepped down in 2015 after an election setback, leaving a legacy of reliable, consensus-driven leadership.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Jens was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
